Kids' Komforts has been a major service project of the Guild for many years. We have distributed well over 1000 quilts to organizations such as Healthy Moms and Babes, Salvation Army, St. John Social Services, and Bethany House. Last year we distributed 189 quilts, and we will probably exceed that number this year, considering the number of quilts we already have.

We usually kick off the project with a Sew-a-thon in March.  This is an all day gathering where members can make quilts, make kits, help organize the ever growing fabric stash, and of course, socialize.  Our collection of quilts is displayed at a Guild meeting in November or December, and we distribute them in early December.

Quilts are made from donated fabric and batting. Mountain Mist has been a very generous supplier of batting over the years!  Several years ago, the committee started making quilt kits, with patches and strips already cut, and backing and batting. These have been very popular and keep us busy in between Guild meetings!

Mountain Mist Challenge:  We have learned that Mountain Mist will provide us with a roll of batting if we collect 100 UPC labels from any of their products: batting, pillow forms, stuffing. You can drop off labels at our table, or drop them in the mail to us.

We are open to suggestions for new agencies that might benefit from a donation of Kids' Komfort quilts.  We are always willing to accept fabric donations!

If you want to make a quilt from your own stash, we have a few guidelines:

  • Use cotton or cotton blends only. Use light or medium weight polyester or bonded cotton batting.
  • Do not use embellishments as buttons, bows, fabric paint, or trinkets that a child could pull off and put in his mouth.
  • Quilts should be at least 36 inches square. There is no maximum size limit.
  • Tops can be as simple as a colorful juvenile print that is tied or quilted, or a cheater panel. These are great projects for practicing machine quilting.
  • If you can only get a top made, that’s fine. We have volunteers who will either tie or quilt the top.
  • If you are tying the quilt, use natural fibers rather than acrylic yarns. Use double square knots every four inches.
  • If you finish a quilt by turning it pillow style rather than by binding, be sure to top stitch around the edges.
  • Remember that these quilts are going to be well loved and well used, so the sturdier, the better!
